A volunteer is someone who gives their time to help improve the lives of others. In the UK, many charities and community groups use volunteers as part of their work. Volunteer roles are very varied: it could be helping the elderly, befriending those who are isolated or in ill health, being a sports coach, being an event volunteer, supporting children at a school and many more.

It is a chance to use your qualifications and develop your skills and to learn new ones. It is also an opportunity to make new friends, practice your English and learn about the work environment in the UK.

Employers like people who volunteer in the community

Many employers would give a job to someone who has volunteered in the UK in preference to someone who has not done any volunteering or work at all. It is a chance to get an up to date reference.

Get a reference

At the end of your time as a volunteer, you may get a reference from the organisation or voluntary group. By demonstrating regularity and commitment volunteers can obtain references which have real value to future employers.
There are many opportunities to volunteer in Southampton. Anyone over 18 can volunteer.
