All children in England between the ages of 5 and 16 have the right to go to a state school. Children normally start primary school at the age of four. Children normally leave primary school at the age of 11 and go to secondary school. Most state schools admit both boys and girls, though some are single-sex.

It is the law that all children must attend school between the ages of 5 to 16 years.

The school year runs from September to July and is divided into 3 terms.

Find a school

To find the schools near where you live contact the School Admissions Team at Southampton City Council. They will take your child´s name, date of birth and address and send you an application form and list of schools.

You must fill in the form and send it back. The admissions team will send you a letter to tell you which school to go to and a start date.

It is important to apply early. Apply in the autumn term a year before your child starts school. For example if you want your child to start secondary school in September 2011, you must apply in September or October 2010. Once you know which schools are near you, try and get more information about them. This will help you to choose which schools are best for your child.

Some schools are very popular so if all the places are full, your child may not get the school of your choice. If your child does not get a place at the school you prefer, you have a legal right to appeal.
